English Ed Professor Sherdian Blau On Student Summer Reading Lists ☆

An April article in Reuters Health on new research into choice in young children’s summer reading lists, Distinguished Senior Lecturer and English Education Program Coordinator Sheridan Blau is quoted as saying,

…of course free choice is going to be better… They’re going to find something they’re interested in instead of being assigned work.

The article notes,

Based on reading assessments before and after summer break, the researchers found that reading scores significantly improved among children who selected books before break. There was no change among students who received unselected books in the mail.

With such promising outcomes, “Some schools are adopting free choice in reading,” said Professor Blau.
