Pianist and composer Jo-Yu Chen (Music and Music Education Ed.D.C.T. ’05) has released her third album, “Stranger,” on Okeh/Sony Records and has joined the renowned International roster of Steinway artists.

Jo-Yu is the first Taiwanese jazz artist to be signed to a major record label and has been featured in prestigious concert halls, venues, and international jazz magazines to critical acclaim. This past July, Jo-Yu and her piano trio performed two full-house sets at the famous Blue Note, considered one of the world’s most prominent jazz venues.

As a Jazz pianist, Jo-Yu has had the opportunity to study with many jazz piano masters, including Jason Moran, Sam Yahel, and Kevin Hays.

According Sam Yahel, “I would have to say that she ranks as one of the most talented and ambitious musicians I have ever met.  Her unique background as a classical musician, combined with her tireless creative enthusiasm has served to elevate her to a level very rarely found among players of her generation.  Her musical gifts have allowed her to progress at what seems an almost impossible pace.”

Jo-Yu studied oboe and piano at The Juilliard School, jazz piano at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and went on to complete her Doctorate in Music Education at Teachers College.
