BBE Alumnus Greg Halzen Wins 2012 NABE Award ☆
The Bilingual/Bicultural program is pleased to congratulate 2010 BBE Peace Corps Fellow Alumnus Greg Halzen, who has been awarded the 2012 NABE (National Association for Bilingual Education) Teacher of the Year award.
Halzen, a Grade 6-8 Dual Language Social Studies teacher at IS 93 in Ridgewood, Brooklyn, accepted his award with thanks to the mentorship and training of TC Professor Maria Torres-Guzman. “In the end I will be accepting the award as encouragement to the communities that implement bilingual education (especially dual language) in political environments that may have misunderstandings about bilingual education. I hope we can all learn that it ultimately is an effort for quality English learning, quality foreign language education, and dignity in multilingual communities as well as the global economy. I feel that there are many teachers who are better, but I suppose it is important to encourage efforts where new dual language programs are getting started. I hope I can continue to take lessons from the generations that came before us to heart and act on them to possibly reduce injustices left for future generations.”
As part of his award, Halzen will be attending the NABE Annual Conference in Dallas from February 15-17th.
