In this course we will undertake study together in the field of curriculum studies through its critical and aesthetic traditions, specifically in addressing the contributions of critical pedagogy (with particular grounding in the works of Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal). Here, as well, we will experientially consider the arts as a curricular venue for critically engaging pedagogy for self-awareness and social justice: for fostering educational experience that, rather than ‘anesthetizing’, ‘aesthetizes’—wakes us up, in the midst of the historical difficulties we face, to the possibilities of peace and radical love. In this way, we explore new ways to frame debates on global issues, translate theory into practice, and initiate creative responses to pressing concerns, especially in addressing issues of human vulnerability, poverty and suffering.
